5am update: Nicole makes landfall south of Vero Beach. Downgraded to tropical storm. Bands of wind-driven rain passing through again and again.

My prayers are with each and every one of you. Just one question, how do storms and hurricanes get their names? Ian, Nicole, what's next?

Sometime before hurricane season starts, the national weather service (i believe) chooses names for the next hurricane season.

They alternate letters between boy and girl
A-boy
B-girl
C-boy
D-girl

or
A-girl
B-boy
C- girl
D-boy

If a storm is damaging, they will retire the name and that name will never be used again (Andrew, Katrina, Sandy, Ian, Jeanne, etc)

If its an active season and goes past the letter Z, then we use alpha, beta, gamma, delta, etc (the greek alphabet)

I could be wrong on this but i dont think storms are named until they become tropical storms which are 35 MPH or greater winds

I am not 100% on what i have said above but its the cliff notes
